SPPS is a proud participant in the National Farm to School, providing a hot lunch program featuring fresh meats, eggs, and produce from local farms. The Farm to School program strives to provide healthy food options that are appealing to students. Some of the new menu items include: Pasta Bar (whole grain rotini, butternut squash marinara, meat sauce, broccoli, whole grain garlic stick, and fruit cup); Burrito Bowl with beans and Cilantro Rice; Oven baked chicken tenders w/ BBQ sauce, whipped potatoes, homemade applesauce, and roll). Additionally, “Salad Jars” will be available daily, including Cobb Salad, Spinach and Bacon Salad, or Chicken Caesar Salad.
The Farm to school program enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early care and education settings. Students gain access to healthy, local foods as well as education opportunities such as school gardens, cooking lessons and farm field trips. Farm to school empowers children and their families to make informed food choices while strengthening the local economy and contributing to vibrant communities.
