Middle School Summer Reading Assignment

Sts. Peter & Paul Regional Catholic School– Middle School (6th-8th)

Summer Reading List

This summer, students will be assigned one book per grade level.  In addition, students are asked to read a minimum of a half an hour (30 minutes) per week throughout the summer (at or slightly above their grade level). This reading can be done from a variety of sources: newspapers, magazine articles, novels, short stories, non-fiction, etc. Many students are on a range of reading levels, and we want your student to find books that are on his/her level, or slightly above. For a reference, these are the average lexile levels for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade readers:

6th grade: 665L to 1000L

7th grade: 735L to 1065L

8th grade: 805L to 1100L (and above depending on your child’s reading level)

If you are unsure of your child’s reading level or if you feel the listed MAP score lexile level does not reflect your child’s ability, he/she can answer a couple of questions at: https://lexile.com/fab/, and it will start him/her on the right track. We also recommend looking up potential book titles on the website, Common Sense Media, which will help you and your child evaluate if the book’s content is appropriate.

Over the summer, students are asked to read the book selected for their incoming grade level (listed below).  If your child has already read the book, we are asking that he/she read it again in better detail. Every time we re-read a book, we find new things we didn’t see before!  There will be a short test covering the book’s content the first week of school.  In addition, students are asked to complete the “Tic-Tac-Toe” Assignment Sheet attached.  Directions are included.  Attached, you will also find a blank reading log to complete for your child’s independent reading of one-hour per week.  This reading does NOT need to be done in one sitting, or even on the same text.  Your child may use the required summer reading book towards the reading log. Feel free to explore literature with your child throughout the summer from a variety of genres!  Take a trip to the library or window shop at a nearby bookstore! If you have any questions or would like recommendations, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
